A school bus driver has been thrown through a windscreen after a collision with a truck north of Wellsford this morning.

Fire Service northern communications manager Dallas Ramsay said the bus was hit from behind by a truck on State Highway 1 between Wellsford and Te Hana just after 7.15am.

The driver of the bus was hurled through the windscreen on impact.

The bus was not carrying any passengers.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said one person suffered moderate injuries in the crash.

The accident caused major traffic congestion on the northern highway.

One lane was closed and vehicles were streaming past the crash in single file. Drivers were warned to expect delays.
