An elderly man is believed to have been trying to retrieve his wallet when he drowned in the harbour in east Auckland this morning.

The man fell into the water near Kelly Tarltons on Tamaki Drive just before 9am.

His body has been recovered from the water and police are in the process of notifying his next of kin.

The death will be referred to the Coroner.

It is been a tragic weekend in New Zealand waters, with at least seven dying on a fishing charter trip on the Kaipara Harbour yesterday.

It is believed the boat, the Francie, capsized near the treacherous bar crossing. One person is still missing.
