State Highway 2 is now partially open to traffic after it was closed when a truck and trailor rolled earlier this morning.
However, police are warning motorists to expect delays.
Police said stop/go operations are in place, allowing traffic to get through.
It is hoped the road is fully reopened by tonight.
The accident was at Matawai, 60km south of Opotiki.
Police said in a statement the truck and trailer rolled at 8.20am, about 1km east of the Manganuku camping ground.
No-one was injured and the Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit was notified.
The truck was not blocking the road but due to its size, SH2 was closed from 12pm to allow recovery vehicles access to remove it.
Earlier those planning to travel to Gisborne were advised to take an alternative route around the coast.
