One person was flown by the Northland Rescue Helicopter to Whangarei Hospital and another was transported by ambulance to Bay of Islands hospital after a school bus and ute collided on a rural Northland road this morning.

The crash happened 7km from Kaeo on Omaunu Rd about 8.15am. A Northern Advocate reporter at the scene said up to 14 students were on the bus at the time. Locals in the area banded together and delivered the uninjured children to school.

After taking the injured person to Kaitaia Hopsital the crew on the Northland Rescue Helicopter were to refuel and continue about 150km north to collect two injured people from a ship.
