A would-be drunk driver was stopped from getting behind the wheel tonight after she posted on Facebook asking if there were any police breath checks in the area.

The woman asked a community Facebook group, which the Herald has decided not to name: "Anyone know if theres any police checkpoints between...Need to [get] my kid to hosp and. Ive had a. Few.'' (sic)

Many members of the public were shocked and upset, with one writing: "Everyone keep off the road!''

Another posted: "Is this chick for real?''

The Herald brought the post to the attention of police after a reporter spotted it about 8pm.

It is understood other members of the public also alerted authorities about the woman's intentions.

A police spokeswoman said later tonight officers had visited the woman and had spoken with her.

Her child did not require hospital treatment in the end, police said.
