A man has been found dead in a spa pool at a motel in Central Otago tonight.
However, drowning may not have been the cause of death, police say.
Authorities were called to the Alexandra Avenue Motel, on Centennial Ave, just before 9pm.
A police spokeswoman said officers were calling the death "a drowning event'' but it was thought the man, in his 60s, may have died from a medical episode.
St John ambulance staff were giving the man CPR next to the spa pool when police arrived, but he was unable to be resuscitated.
The death would be referred to the coroner and a post-mortem examination would be carried out this week.
If police found the man had likely slipped and hit his head before entering the water it would be referred to Worksafe.
A man at the motel declined to comment on the matter.
