A person is dead after a car crashed into a bridge in Rodney District early this morning.

Police said Matakana Rd had been closed after a single vehicle accident west of Matakana.

Emergency services were at the scene where the driver of the car had died.

There were no other passengers in the vehicle.

Fire Service northern shift manager Jaron Phillips said firefighters were called just after 4.20am to the crash scene.

The car had crashed into a bridge on the rural road.

Police said the road would be closed for several hours while the scene was cleared and the Serious Crash Unit investigated the accident.
