A pair of kayakers battled for two hours to paddle into shore before managing to call for help.

A police spokeswoman said they were 5km offshore from Eastern Beach in East Auckland.

She believed there were two people involved, they were both wearing life jackets and said there were no reported injuries.

One of them contacted the police maritime unit at 1.05pm

"It looks like the person who is calling us is out on the kayak."

The spokeswoman said the kayakers had been picked up by the police maritime unit and "everyone is fine".
