A parked car was shot at in Lower Hutt overnight.

Police are investigating the shooting, which put a large hole in the window of the car door.

The car, which was parked on George St in Stokes Valley, was empty at the time of the shooting. It appeared to have been shot at once, possibly by a shotgun.

A police spokesperson said it happened just after 2.15am.

Police and a dog unit immediately went to the scene.

There was no description of the person who carried out the shooting, said a spokesperson, but police would like to hear from anyone who saw a dark two-door sedan, possibly a Honda, in the area at the time.

Police arrested a man nearby who was charged with unrelated offences.
