Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae is about to attend a state farewell as he nears the end of his five-year term as the Queen's representative.

Today's event in Wellington will begin at 11.40am with Sir Jerry's arrival at Parliament. Prime Minister John Key will be among those to greet him.

There will be a 21-gun salute from Point Jerningham before a state farewell luncheon in Parliament's Banquet Hall.

Sir Jerry completes his term on August 31. His successor, Dame Patsy Reddy, will be sworn in on September 28.
