A stolen car drove on the wrong side of the road during a high-speed police chase in West Auckland early today.
Police said the pursuit spanned several suburbs and reached "excessive" speeds.
The chase began at about 3am after a suspected stolen car took off when police tried to pull it over on West Coast Rd in Glen Eden.
The car sped around the outskirts of Henderson with police in pursuit until it was deemed too dangerous to continue.
A police spokesman said at times the car crossed travelled on the wrong side of the road.
The roads were wet at the time and conditions were described as "dicey".
The fleeing car took a circuit along West Coast, Henderson Valley and Lincoln Rds before the vehicle was abandoned on Universal Drive.
A police dog squad found four people a short time later. They were all now in custody.
