Two people are in a critical condition after a serious crash on a stretch of highway between Puhoi and Warkworth shortly before 2pm this afternoon.

Emergency services, including numerous fire appliances and a rescue helicopter attended the accident near Schollum Access Rd.

A Fire Service spokeswoman said two motorbikes and one vehicle were involved.

"No one is trapped, but the road is closed while we set up the landing site for the Westpac helicopter."

She said as well as the two critically injured passengers there was also one with minor injuries.

The spokeswoman said there were two fire trucks in attendance as well as a number of other vehicles with staff to assist with keeping the roads clear.

A police spokeswoman confirmed police were also heading to the scene, but said details at her end were still sketchy.

State Highway 1, between Silverdale and Warkworth, has now reopened after the crash.

The diversions between Silverdale and Warkworth were now lifted, New Zealand Transport Agency said.

Traffic remained heavy in the area and drivers were advised to allow plenty of time for their journeys.
