Seven injured in crash near Makarora

Seven people have been injured, three seriously, in a crash north of Makarora this afternoon.

In a statement, a police spokeswoman said a person was trapped in a vehicle about 3km north of Rata Rd.

Haast Pass was closed, but one lane has now been opened.

A St John spokesman said two ambulances and two helicopters were sent to the crash about 1.50pm.

Three people sustained serious injuries and were flown in two helicopters to Dunedin Hospital's emergency department.

Four people sustained minor to moderate injuries and were taken by ambulance to Wanaka Medical Centre for further assessment.
