A Carterton woman has taken to Facebook to try to catch a burglar who crept around her house in the early hours of the morning before stealing several pairs of shoes.

The woman posted CCTV images of the alleged burglar on Facebook, who she says followed her neighbour home from town and then checked the doors to her house before stealing shoes at about 1am on Sunday.

South Wairarapa Sergeant Richie Day said Carterton police had attended the High St burglary, and would like to speak to the man pictured in the CCTV images.

"An unknown male has stolen two pairs of shoes from the porch and looked through the windows of the locked vehicle and tried to open the door to the house.

"If anyone can assist us please contact police as soon as possible," Mr Day said.

The man was described as Pakeha and about 180cm tall.

He was wearing a high-vis jacket, camouflage pants, gumboots, a fur-lined hat and a backpack.
