A man shot by police after a stand-off in Whanganui has pleaded not guilty to charges of burglary and kidnapping.

Wattie Adolf Kahu was shot by an officer on March 24 following a police sweep through central Whanganui involving armed officers and police dogs.

The 49-year-old appeared in the Whanganui District Court this morning, facing 11 charges including burglary and kidnapping

His lawyer Debbie Goodlet said some charges would likely be accepted in the future but "the number and nature" needed further consideration.

Kahu was remanded in custody to reappear on June 14.
