Police have revealed the car involved in an incident where a young woman was found dead on a Waikato road was a dark blue Honda.

Ocean Heke, 17, tragically lost her life on Sunday morning after she was hit by a vehicle.

The teen was walking home from a friends 18th birthday party when the incident occurred.

Detective senior sergeant Ross Patterson said the make of the car police believe to have been involved in the accident was a Honda.

"We believe there was only one vehicle involved. A dark coloured car had crashed into the fence outside Freight Lines. We believed it is linked to the accident is which Ocean lost her life."

He said an examination of the vehicle was still underway.

"We are hoping to have the examination of the car completed today and that will give us some indication of where we are going with our inquiry. We are still speaking to witnesses."

Yesterday police said to young people were helping with their inquiries.
