A 35-year-old Reefton man is in a coma and in a serious condition in Christchurch Hospital after he rolled his vehicle several times down a bank on State highway 7, near Maimai, on Saturday evening.

Police said today it appeared the driver failed to negotiate a bend and in crashing was ejected from the vehicle.

The NZCC West Coast Rescue Helicopter initially took the crash victim to Grey Base Hospital but he was later flown to Christchurch, where he remains in a coma.
