A tug boat has joined the efforts to put out a boat fire in the entrance to Marsden Pt marina near Whangarei.

Emergency services were called just after midday to what's believed to be a 40ft vessel on fire.

A Marsden Pt oil refinery rescue boat with firefighters on board has been trying to extinguish the fire.

She says it appears extra resources such as pumps and hoses were needed and a tug boat has gone out to assist.
