A man is being spoken to by police after leading them on a chase on the outskirts of Hamilton before crashing his car into a paddock.

A witness estimated five police cars, one fire appliance and a St John ambulance raced through the small settlement of Gordonton, just north of Hamilton, about 10.30am today.

Northern fire communications shift manager Steve Smith said the man's car eventually crashed and rolled into a paddock on the corner of Gordonton and Peach Rds at 10.42am.

The occupant then fled the scene, however, he was soon after captured by Waikato police staff.
