A man accused of attempted murder has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

George Robert Jolley, 24, appeared in the High Court at Rotorua this morning, where he elected trial by jury. He will reappear on June 1.

The charge relates to an incident in Western Heights, Rotorua, in December, which resulted in two men being taken to hospital, one with critical injuries.

Defence lawyer Andy Schulze said a bail application for Jolley was filed yesterday.

No trial date was set.

The Rotorua Daily Post's application to take in-court pictures of Jolley was denied.
