A cyclist ran into the back of a car when it stopped at a pedestrian crossing on Tamaki Drive this morning, say police.

Senior Sergeant Dale Simeti said the injured cyclist was travelling in a pack of three riders heading towards the city when the car in front of them pulled up at a crossing in Mission Bay to allow a pedestrian to cross the road.

"The cyclist has run into the back of a vehicle which has stopped in front of him," said Mr Simeti.

The accident happened in the main Mission Bay shopping precinct just before 10am today.

Mr Simeti said the cyclist did not see the car had stopped. The force of the impact sent the cyclist hurtling to the road.

The injured rider was taken to hospital for treatment.
