A 68-year-old man died after suffering a "medical event" while he was cycling on a Coromandel road yesterday.
Waikato Police district road policing manager Inspector Freda Grace said emergency services were called to Whangapoua Rd, State Highway 25, about 5pm.
The man was cycling up a hill when he veered left and collapsed, falling from his bike down a bank, she said.
A driver witnessed the incident.
"While initially treated as a road fatality, medical examinations have established the man's death was in fact a result of a medical episode," Ms Grace said.
"On behalf of NZ Police we would like to extend our sympathies to the man's family and friends."
The death has been referred to the coroner.
