Dunedin police are investigating the death of a woman at a Waldronville property and have launched a homicide investigation.
An extensive part of the Brighton Rd area, between Vulcan and Viscount Rds and near the Island Park golf course, was cordoned off and it was understood a police scene guard would be maintained overnight.
Police said they were called to the scene about 6.30pm on Friday night and the middle-aged woman was found dead inside the property.
An injured man was located outside the address.
He was "taken to hospital with moderate injuries", a spokesman said.
A 22-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the incident. That man also had injuries and had been given medical treatment.
Police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.
Asked if a stabbing had occurred and if any weapons had been recovered, a police spokesman said that such matters could be clarified only through continuing police inquiries, and through an autopsy. "That will form part of our inquiries."
Saddle Hill Community Board chairman Scott Weatherall said that the incident was "a tragedy within the community" and had come as a great shock in a quiet rural area.
The locals would offer any "community support, family support" required for the people affected.
"They'll rally around," Mr Weatherall said.
"There's no doubt that any support the family may want will be given," he said.
The mutual support within the Waldronville community was "very, very high", he said, and people would soon ensure that any support needed would be provided.
