Large plumes of black smoke from a commercial building fire in central Tauranga could be seen rising above the city's skyline this morning.
About 25 firefighters are battling the blaze amid strong winds at the two-storey Action Equipment building in Glasgow St.
Police had cordoned off the street as well as Elizabeth St and Cameron Rd, and local businesses were being evacuated as the firefighters, some using cranes, were attempting to contain the blaze which broke out at around 10.30am.
Northern Fire Communications shift manager Megan Ruru said about six trucks were involved and the fire covered an area of 15 by 30 metres.
A Bay of Plenty Times reporter at the scene said the building was gutted and fire fighters had to smash down the door to get in.
Smoke could be seen as far away as the city suburb of Matua, and witnesses had reported a strange smell from as far as seven blocks away.
