A man has been charged over a confrontation where a police officer was shot in Hamilton earlier this week.

A 35-year-old man, who was also injured in Monday's incident, was released from hospital today and charged with a variety of offences.

He appeared in Hamilton District Court on charges of using a firearm against a law enforcement officer and aggravated robbery in relation to incidents in Kihikihi on Sunday.

He also faced charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, reckless driving, using a firearm against a law enforcement officer and assault with intent to rob over the shooting in Hamilton on Monday, Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Whitehead, area manager investigations of Waikato, police said.

"In addition the man also appeared in relation to warrants issued for his arrest for offending in May and June which included aggravated robbery, burglary, unlawful taking of motor vehicles and possession of equipment for the manufacture of methamphetamine charges."

The officer injured on Monday was discharged from hospital later that day, and police were looking at an appropriate form of recognition for him and his two colleagues, Mr Whitehead said.
