Four bus passengers were injured when two buses collided in central Wellington tonight.

The incident between a Go Wellington bus and a Newlands' bus happened on Lambton Quay about 5.20pm, Inspector Mike Coleman of central police communications said.

Four people were treated at the scene for minor injuries, he said.

The Go Wellington bus suffered a smashed windscreen and the Newlands' bus had a large dent in its rear.

Police would be investigating the incident, Mr Coleman said.

Rain was falling at the time of the crash.

Metlink Wellington said the incident caused delays with buses in the area.
