Traffic on Puhinui Road is at a standstill, and police have closed the motorway interchange.

It's unlikely the road will be open until at least 10am.

Motorists trying to get to the airport are being redirected via George Bolt drive.

Police, Fire, Ambulance and Airport Crash/Fire staff are at the scene and the serious crash unit will be investigating.

Police say at this stage there's no indication of how long it'll take to clear the road and anyone headed to the airport should consider a different route.
