One person has died following a head-on crash near Te Puke this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the collision, on State Highway 2 about 3km north of Te Puke shortly after 12.30pm.

When they arrived, both drivers were trapped in their vehicles. Neither were carrying passengers.

One of the drivers died at the scene and the second suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Tauranga Hospital.

Early indications suggested one of the vehicles crossed the centre line and collided head-on with the other vehicle, although it was unknown which vehicle was at fault.

The ages and gender of the drivers was not immediately available.

Traffic was moving slowly in the vicinity of the crash site and was down to a single lane, police said.
