Radio warnings for seafarers will now be available in text, online.

The safety information includes navigational and meteorological warnings, meteorological forecast and other urgent safety-related messages broadcast to ships.

The online warnings will cover all three types of navigational warnings - long range (NAVAREA), coastal and local.

The warnings will be posted in full on the Land Information New Zealand website, where Notices to Mariners are also found.

The organisation worked with Maritime New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand and MetService to make the information accessible from the one location.

Maritime New Zealand warned that while the it gave mariners another place to check information when preparing for a voyage, it did not replace the Inmarsat SafetyNET service or radio broadcasts as the official channel for the latest warnings and forecast information.

The online navigation information can be found here.
