Two motorcyclists were injured, one critically, when a large three-wheeled motorcycle crashed and rolled near Motueka overnight.

The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was called to the crash at Mariri, just south of Motueka, about midnight.

A large trike-style motorcycle had left the road and rolled before coming to rest in a ditch.

One of the riders was assessed by the rescue helicopter's intensive care paramedic before being flown to Nelson Hospital in a critical condition.

The other rider, who sustained moderate injuries, was taken to hospital by ambulance.
