A 76-year-old man has died after a three-car collision south of Levin today, police say.
The crash happened on State Highway 1 at Ohau, just after 2.15pm, Senior Sergeant Kris Burbery said.
Initial inquiries suggested a north-bound Toyota Hilux had crossed the centre line and crashed into a south-bound Suzuki Swift before colliding with a BMW that the deceased was driving, he said.
Four people were involved in the crash - two in the BMW and one each in the Swift and Hilux.
"The BMW driver was airlifted to Wellington hospital but died shortly after arriving,'' Mr Burbery said.
Two others suffered moderate injuries and were taken to Palmerston North Hospital.
The forth person received minor injuries.
Both lanes of the highway were closed for some time so police could clear the road and examine the scene, however the highway had since re-opened.
The Serious Crash Unit was investigating and was continuing to make inquiries and speak to witnesses.
"We are keen to speak to anyone that witnessed the crash and we encourage them to contact police,'' Mr Burbery said.
