The name of the woman who died after being hit by a car in Kaitaia last night has been released by police.

Local mother-of-two Georgina Manuel, 28, was run over by a vehicle about 10pm yesterday on Pukepoto Road near Kaitaia.

She died about 5am today in Whangarei Hospital, police said. A homicide inquiry has begun.

Senior Sergeant Geoff Ryan, officer in charge of Kaitaia, said Ms Manuel's children were being cared for by relatives.

Just before noon today, a 45-year-old man handed himself in to Whangarei police.

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident and are examining a vehicle believed to have been involved.

They want to hear from anyone who heard or saw anything unusual on Pukepoto Rd and Grigg St about 10pm yesterday.
