One person has died in a house fire in Pongaroa, south of Dannevirke overnight.

Fire services were called to the Korora Rd house in the Tararua district just before 3am, and found it well alight on arrival.

Central fire communications shift manager David Meikle said one person died in the fire, which was being investigated by fire investigators and police.

It was not considered to be suspicious, Mr Meikle said.

An ambulance spokesman said two other people were treated for minor injuries.

Emergency services were also called to a blaze in Palmerston North during the night.

Mr Meikle said stables had caught fire at a Awapuni property.

At least one horse was believed to have died, he said.

An ambulance spokesman said one man with moderate injuries was taken to Palmerston North Hospital.

The fire, which was attended by three trucks, was being investigated today.
