One man is dead and another person is critically injured following two shooting incidents around the Waikato town of Matamata overnight.
Waikato field crime manager, Detective Inspector Karl Thornton, said emergency services were called to a Mowbray Rd address in Waharoa shortly after 11pm.
"A woman had rung 111 to report that her 20-year-old boyfriend had been shot by an offender who then fled the property in a utility vehicle," Mr Thornton said.
"Police secured the scene to allow ambulance staff to treat the victim who was then airlifted to Waikato Hospital where he is currently in a critical but stable condition."
Mr Thornton said police, including the Waikato Armed Offenders Squad, searched the Matamata and nearby Waharoa areas, and found the body of another man at an address on Tower Road, Matamata, about 3.20am.
"The 21-year-old had suffered a gunshot wound and police do not believe his death is suspicious. The investigation team are not seeking anyone else in relation to either of the shootings and scene guards are in place at both addresses with forensic examinations likely to commence at first light."
