Firefighters were battling a suspicious blaze at a Christchurch primary school today.

Emergency services were called to Beckenham School on Sandwich Road just before midday today.

A classroom and library block were well alight by the time fire crews arrived, shift manager Andrew Norris of southern fire communications said.

It was not known how many classrooms were in the block.

Five fire appliances had got the fire under control, Mr Norris said.

Police and fire safety officers were at the scene.
