Hope you enjoyed the sun while it was here.

MetService says stormy weather's on the way - and the South Island particularly is in the firing line.

To add to its warning earlier this morning of strong blustery winds on their way - the West Coast and Southern Alps are now due for such a soaking that rainfall totals are likely to approach one and two day records.

It's all from a particularly strong and moist northwest flow expected to affect southern and central parts of the country from late today through to Wednesday or early Thursday.

MetService says very heavy rain could cause flooding and may well have to be declared an extreme event.

Campers near lakes and rivers in Canterbury and Otago are being warned water levels could rise rapidly - even if it's not raining at their camp site.
