Motorists in the lower North Island are being urged to be patient as police receive reports of heavy traffic on State Highway One.

Police Shift Commander Sergeant Andy Dow says the only reason they can find for the slow-moving traffic is due to various Boxing Day events.

He says the nice weather is also encouraging people to get out and about.

Sergeant Dow is asking motorists to drive to the conditions and be patient.
