Fatal fire victim named

Police have released the name of a woman who died in a house fire in Whanganui on Tuesday.

Ellen Marie Newland, 32 was the sole occupant of the house on Maxwell Ave, Durie Hill, which caught fire sometime before 1pm.

Detective Sergeant Phil Taylor said the cause of the fire had been established as an electrical fault.

"This is a tragedy for Ellen's family and our thoughts are with them during this difficult and painful time,'' he said.

Police and the Fire Service are continuing their investigation and the matter has been referred to the coroner.
