Hawke's Bay's oil response team has worked through the night dealing with a diesel spill in Napier Harbour.

It leaked from a vessel at the marina end of the harbour just before 6pm yesterday.

Luckily the wind blew the diesel in to a corner of the harbour and it was boomed off quickly, with the clean-up process beginning last night.

Regional on scene commander Bryce Lawrence says it's not yet clear exactly how much escaped.

"It's somewhere between 1500 and 3000 litres, that is still to be confirmed and established."

Boaties are able to launch this morning from the sailing club's fishing ramps, but need to stay clear of the boom.
