A forestry worker died this morning felling a tree in a horror logging accident.
The man, described by police as a local in his 30s, was one of a group undertaking forestry work on a forestry block off Tokomaru West Road, in the Brunswick area of Wanganui.
He was involved in the felling of a tree when he sustained fatal injuries, police say.
Emergency services were notified about 9.45am that a man had suffered a "traumatic injury''.
An ambulance spokeswoman said: "We got a call from a member of the public about a person who had suffered injuries and who subsequently died at the scene.''
It is believed the man was found at the bottom of an embankment.
The Fire Service assisted police in recovering the man's body from the forestry block.
There are no suspicious circumstances and the death will be referred to the coroner. The Department of Labour will also be advised.
Police refused to give details about the man's injuries or the cause of his death.
He is expected to be named tomorrow.
