Police have named the teenage pedestrian hit and killed by a car in Auckland just hours after Sunday's Rugby World Cup final.

Sanele Pauli, 17, died after being hit by a silver Nissan Primera as he crossed Great North Rd in Pt Chevalier about 2.20am on Monday.

Sanele and two male relatives had got off a west-bound bus near the intersection of Premier Ave and Great North Rd.

The police serious crash unit is investigating and officers have spoken to the driver of the car.

Constable Mark Rodgers said he would like to hear from other witnesses to the crash and the immediate lead-up to it.

"We'd also like to speak to anyone who was on the bus - including the driver - who may have seen the tragedy unfold."

Anyone with information can contact Mr Rodgers on 09 359 3116 or email

Seven people were killed on the roads during the official Labour Weekend holiday road toll period, from 4pm on Friday to 6am today.
