The Employers Association boss has defended his claim women get paid less than men because they have monthly "sick problems", have babies and need to take extra leave as the "facts of life".

The Council of Trade Unions (CTU) has called for Employers and Manufacturers Association chief executive Alasdair Thomson to resign over what it calls his sexist and discriminatory statements.

Mr Thompson admitted there was a gender pay gap in New Zealand, but he told Newstalk ZB it was partly explained by some women needing sick days every month, along with extra time off to care for children.
