A 76-year-old Tahitian woman killed when she was hit by a bus in Auckland this morning was due to leave the country on Sunday.
Jeanine Bennett was struck by the bus as she crossed Great South Rd near Ngaire Avenue at about 8:45am, police said.
The fatal collision happened outside the motel where she was staying with family.
Police said it is understood she and her family were due to leave New Zealand this Sunday.
A witness at the scene said he heard a screech of brakes and a loud crash before seeing an elderly woman dead on the road.
The bus driver covered the dead woman with his jacket before others arrived with blankets, he said.
Auckland serious crash unit said they were looking to speak to a doctor who arrived at the scene immediately after the crash and assisted Ms Bennett.
They appealed for anyone who was on the Waka Pacific bus which hit the woman who hadn't yet spoken to police to come forward.
The bus was bound for downtown Auckland and the registration was CML343.
