Accused inmate shackled to guard

A prison inmate had his hands shackled together and was handcuffed to a security guard when he appeared in court today on a raft of charges.

The inmate cannot be named and was remanded to appear again in April for a pre-trial hearing on charges of attempting to kidnap, assault and threatening to kill.

The charges arose from two separate incidents, in prison and in a prison van, and would be tried separately.

The man was representing himself but a lawyer had been appointed by the court to give him legal advice.
