An estimated 5,000 motorcyclists have joined today's "bikoi" protesting ACC levy rises, according to organisers.
The convoy of bikes has almost reached parliament and stretches back about 25km to Paremata, north of Porirua on State Highway One. It merges with a separate convoy on SH2 at Ngauranga.
Organiser Brent Hutchison initially estimated 12,500 motorcyclists had joined the hikoi, but later revised it to 5000.
"We own State Highway One," he said.
Police have put the estimate at roughly 3500.
Police spokeswoman Elizabeth Young said the protest has caused traffic congestion in the Wellington area this morning.
She said police were expecting more congestion between 2.30 and 4.30pm when the rally breaks up. That will combine with school traffic and Ms Young said motorists should be patient and expect delays.
Ms Young said the crowd had been well behaved.
Several regional protest rallies were held around the country at the weekend.
Bikers wore signs declaring themselves "easy targets" for proposed ACC changes, while suggesting others may be picked off later.
Under the new scheme, the cost of registering a moped would rise $58.97 to $257.58.
All motorcycles currently cost $252.69 but from 2010/11 those 125cc-600cc would rise to $511.43 while those over 600cc will be $745.77.
