Maori Television has confirmed it will screen the controversial documentary The 10 Conditions of Love.
The Australian film recounts the struggle of Muslim Uighur people in Xinjiang, the scene of recent ethnic riots, and their figurehead, Rebiya Kadeer.
At a meeting between Maori Television representatives and officials from theChinese Embassy in Auckland today, the embassy officials requested that plans to broadcast the film be cancelled.
They alleged that Ms Kadeer was linked to terrorist groups and that the content of the film distorted the facts about China's policies regarding the treatment of ethnic minorities.
Maori Television chief executive Jim Mather said the meeting was amicable and respectful but the broadcaster's decision to screen the documentary would stand.
"Maori Television strongly believes in the fundamental right for all people to freedom of speech," said Mr Mather.
"We will at all times protect Maori Television's right, free from political and/or editorial interference, to broadcast the stories of indigenous people both from New Zealand and throughout the world."
