Habitat for Humanity Northland and Manawa Ora Healthy Home Initiative, a Manaia Health PHO programme, want to be able to deliver as many beds as possible before Christmas.
They are hoping the season of goodwill spurs people to give generously.
"There are many kids sleeping on mattresses on the floor or sharing a bed with other family members," said Ngaire Rae, Manaia Health health promotion manager. "This increases the risk of spreading infectious diseases such as rheumatic fever."
Manawa Ora Healthy Home Initiative is a free service helping families create warmer, drier, healthier homes.
The service provides items such as curtains, heating, and insulation.
"About 30 children a month are identified through the Manawa Ora programme as needing beds and bedding but we aren't funded to supply this.
"We really need help from the community to meet this need," Ms Rae said.
Affordable homes provider Habitat for Humanity Northland often had to help new homeowners furnish them, said regional general manager Carina Dickson.
"We want as many children as possible to have their own bed for Christmas," Ms Dickson said.
Beds were not a luxury item but a basic necessity, she said.
"We hope that people are feeling generous this time of year and can help some families in need."
Good quality beds and bedding, or financial donations, can be delivered to Habitat for Humanity Northland, 50B Kioreroa Road, Whangarei.
Beds or other bulky item pick-ups can be arranged in the Whangarei area by calling (09) 438 2250.
