A State Highway 1 sign that put one "A" too many in Whangarei - reading Whanagarei - will be replaced by the end of this week.
The New Zealand Transport Agency is responsible for the state highway signs and said the $7000 sign had the correct spelling when it was approved by the agency but that things went wrong when the contractor manufactured and installed the sign.
The sign was erected on Wednesday and removed Friday morning, within 24 hours of the mistake being brought to the attention of the agency.
It would be replaced by the contractor at no extra cost to the taxpayer, said NZTA Northland and Auckland highway manager Brett Gliddon.
"These signs, including their installation and the foundations required to install them, are around $7000, however the cost of replacing this one won't be that high because the foundations etc are already in place."
