Several bee hives were lit alight in Ohaewai yesterday.

A note was left at the scene of a crime where beehives were found to have been deliberately set on fire, police say.

About four or five beehives were found burning on land off State Highway One at Ohaewai at 10.20am yesterday.

Police said the fire was believed to be arson and said a note was left at the scene.

Okaihau Volunteer Fire Brigade deputy chief fire officer, Jack Winwood, attended the fire.

"It looks like someone has just dumped some rubbish on top and set it a light, there were a dozen [hives] there but only [a few] on fire," he said.

"Why would you feel the need to set the bees on fire?"

Mr Winwood said crews efficiently put the fire out using foam.

Police were investigating the incident and said they had strong leads.
