Terry Tepania

One of the Ahipara Fire Brigade's stalwarts passed away suddenly in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

It is understood that John Terrence (Terry) Tepania had been unwell for some time. He was 63.

Former Ahipara chief fire officer Rodger Beatson said Mr Tepania had been a loyal, totally committed member of the brigade for 33 years. He had received his Gold Star for 25 years' service, along with long service and good conduct decorations, rising to the rank of Chief Officer in Charge.

"He was my deputy CFO for about 25 years," Mr Beatson added, "and his loyalty and commitment to the brigade (and in latter years Far North Surf Rescue) could never have been questioned.

"In fact his commitment was such that his wife once suggested that he might like to take his bed down to the fire station."

Mr Tepania is survived by his wife Frances, children Victor, Martin, Johnny and Robyn and their children. He is lying at Te Ohaki Marae, Ahipara.
